Happy Holiday Weekend, But You're $8,200 in Debt

VICTORIA: The BC Division of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) today wished every British Columbian a happy holiday weekend, but pointed out that BC's total debt has grown to $32.9 billion, or $8,204 per BC citizen.

"Whether you're a senior citizen enjoying your golden years, or born yesterday, each British Columbian's share of the provincial debt on this holiday weekend is now over $8,200," said CTF-BC director Mark Milke. "That's up over $900 per person compared to five years ago."

Milke noted that the Friday release of the BC Auditor General's Report on the 1997-98 fiscal year was critical of the provincial government for no longer having a debt control plan. "The provincial government's fiscal ship is sailing into the long weekend sunset without a rudder or a compass. Perhaps they're relying on luck to get to shore."
